OMSI/WinterHaven PSD2000 Project:

Inquiry Sessions | Portfolio | Resources | Teaching Guide
WinterHaven middle school teacher Paul Griffith's math classes chose to study the technology of the World Wide Web for Public Science Day 2000.
The Web had already become a daily part of life at WinterHaven, but the students wanted to take their understanding of this everyday technology to a new level.
Following the school's philosophy to learn by doing, the students designed a project with lasting value: to create a website that would demonstrate the math concepts they were learning and also serve as a portfolio for their math work.
To start their project, the students needed to increase their general knowledge of computers, the Internet and the World Wide Web. Then they needed to hone their skills to use the Web's HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and create images specifically suited to convey math concepts and illustrations.
To increase their knowledge and develop their skills, Mr. Griffith and his students collaborated with Kate Millgard, technologist in WinterHaven's new Computer Lab, and Nate Angell, an OMSI web developer. In a few short weeks, every WinterHaven middle school student was creating webpages with a deeper understanding of the way the Internet works.
